Refrigerators/Freezers
|
|

To estimate the refrigerator/freezer capacity your family needs, allow 12 cubic feet of total refrigerator and freezer space for the first 2 adults in your household, then add 2 more cubic feet for each additional member. Typically, a family of four would need a refrigerator/freezer with a capacity of 16 cubic feet.
Ranges
|
|
Ranges include gas or electric burners on top and an oven/broiler below. The most common range styles are:
Freestanding (both sides are finished), High-Low (a second oven, regular or microwave, on top provides extra capacity), Drop-In (They look the most built-in but leave dead space beneath), Slide-In (the sides are not finished). Gas or Electric? That depends in part on what's available locally. If natural gas is not available, appliances can be converted to run on bottled liquid propane - but you'll need to arrange for regular delivery.
Cooktops
A surface cooking unit has top burners only and fits into the countertop. Most of the space underneath can be used for conventional storage

Ovens that are separate from cooktops are usually located in wall cabinets are a comfortable height.
The main features to consider, after making a choice between gas and electric, are the size of the oven's interior, whether you need one or two ovens, and what attachments are practical for your family. A convection oven circulates heated air around the food, pulls the air out of the cooking cavity, reheats the air over a hot element, and returns the reheated air to the cavity. Because the convection system is closed, moisture is retained in the unit and therefore in the food.

Ventilation

Under cabinet
These updraft vents are the most common and generally are the most effective and efficient. The hood should extend 3 inches past the sides of the cooking surface and be installed 24 to 30 inches above the surface.
Downdraft
These are a good choice for island cooktops or for areas too small or difficult to install a hood. Standard downdraft vents look like a grill section built into a cooktop.
Canopy
Another type of updraft vent, the canopy is becoming increasingly popular as a decorative focal point in the kitchen. Canopy vents are most often seen over island or peninsula cooktops, but models are made for wall installation as well.
Integrated

The integrated vent is an updraft vent that is installed under or built into a wall-mounted microwave oven, or underneath a wall cabinet.
This type is streamlined and can be trimmed to match cabinetry for a unified design.
